“The beneficial traits gained from being a student athlete include teamwork, perseverance, responsibility, physical endurance, commitment, time management, and personal and emotional health.
The annual pre-participation sports physical exam is an incredibly important part of ensuring our children and teens remain healthy while participating in sports. From a physician’s perspective, we try to identify risk factors and exam abnormalities that might place your child at risk for injury or even sudden cardiac death during sports. Obtaining a thorough family and personal health history is essential. Our goals during the exam include:
-Evaluating for potential life-threatening conditions such as risk of sudden cardiac death with an EKG.
-Looking for health conditions or orthopedic concerns that may need physical therapy or other treatment prior to participation.
-Identifying athletes who may be at higher risk for abuse of performance enhancing drugs, substance abuse, depression, and eating disorders.
-Inquiring about history of concussion and to determine if the student-athlete is still experiencing post-concussion symptoms if previously concussed.
